Our Science and Technology students had the chance to participate in a super interesting lecture by Ben Wilson (Aalto University, Hydrometallurgy and Corrosion) on circular economy & sustainability. It’s not just about the environment, but also about ensuring sustainability is economically viable AND socially responsible! We can’t ignore issues like child labor when sourcing materials for things like electric car batteries.
We also delved into battery recycling – from the earliest ’batteries’ to today’s tech. It was really interesting to hear how battery technology has evolved to meet our power-hungry needs! We talked about what’s in batteries, why recycling is a MUST, and how we still need some mining (but ethically, please!).
Fun fact: Finland’s got some key battery materials, which is a big plus!
Lastly, Ben shared some cool research on recycling batteries and even cleaning up waste from gold mines.
Thank you for visiting our school, Ben!
